Why did you choose INSA Lyon? Fields of study, laboratories, school reputation, experiencing French life?

I chose to study at INSA Lyon firstly because of the university’s reputation; this year, it was ranked as the leader in sciences and engineering. Secondly, because of how the university receives foreign students and finally due to the intensive French courses available for improving your language skills. The opportunity of taking classes in French and English and having lecturers who work in the industry gives us a different, practical, more realistic sense of the topics discussed. It is a multidisciplinary approach that makes learning more attractive. I’ve also enjoyed the facilities available on campus along with the sports halls and restaurants. Above all else, I chose INSA for the quality of teaching and the real support provided to foreign students in adapting and integrating into the university.

What did you enjoy during your INSA Lyon experience?

I was surprised by the personal relationship that the university maintains with its students. The university is open to all nationalities. You will surely find someone else from your country here. As an industrial engineering student, the course is very practical with many projects to do, mostly in groups. This has given me new insight into every aspect studied. Life on campus is extremely enjoyable and it allows easy integration with the students already studying here. I thought it was going to be difficult to make friends, but not at all. You don’t come to uni to just study, it’s for living and taking part.

What did you enjoy in Lyon?

I love Lyon, it’s a big city. But even though it’s the third largest city in France, it’s still cosy and charming. There are many young people here so that helps with making new friends. Public transport works really well and there are bike lanes throughout the city. It’s a green city with a rich history, after all, it was the capital of ancient Gaul. The streets are quiet and there is plenty to do in the city, whether during the day at any of its many tourist sites or at night. The region’s culture is very rich and has a characteristic cuisine. Lyon is an important industrial and business centre. It is ideal for industrial engineering students looking for work placements.

What advice would you offer to future exchange students?

Some advice: Get as much as you can out of your time here, the university has lots to offer to students of all nationalities whether in its courses, research or even the development of new skills outside of class. Join a club or society. INSA has many of them from sports and dancing to small business and TEDx conference organising, to name a few. Make many friends, learn about other cultures and immerse yourself in French culture, because the time passes by so quickly!
